My clients often come to me saying things like, "I've already reached out to everyone I know" or "I don't know how to network" or my favorite, "I hate networking." In order for the right opportunity creation to happen, networking is the first piece of the puzzle.

It's often very difficult for people to ask for help. And when you view networking as asking for something, it's difficult. That's why one of the first things I help my clients understand is that networking is not about "getting something" – it's about building a network of advocates. People who genuinely care about your success and are invested in seeing you shine.

Think of it this way: your network is a puzzle. Every interaction, every connection, adds a new piece to the picture. The goal? To fit these pieces together in a way that creates something entirely new – an opportunity. An opportunity not just for you but for others around you as well.

Beyond Mere Connection: Building Advocates

Networking isn't about filling your contact list with names; it's about identifying those who can champion your ideas and become true allies.

The good news? Platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter have transformed the game. They allow you to connect with industry leaders, potential collaborators, and mentors without a formal introduction. But be careful, in addition to easily being a time suck, they also give the false illusion that networking is a numbers game. Authenticity beats numbers.

Engage with genuine interest, listen with intent to add value regardless of what they may or may not be able to do for you, offer insightful comments, and remember – a simple interaction can spark a powerful connection. Listen with the intent of helping even if you don't know how they can help you. Make connections even if they can't make you connections.

From Networking to Opportunity Creation: The Shift

Networking is not just about who you know, it's about what you create together. Traditional networking can be a springboard, but the real magic happens when you leverage those connections to build something innovative. Think of it like this: networking gives you contacts; opportunity creation turns them into collaborators.

It's about action – translating conversations into projects and ideas into products. So, keep networking, but remember, the real gold lies in what you co-create with your network.

The Essential Toolkit for Opportunity Creation 

  • Critical Thinking: Don't just accept things at face value. Analyze, question, and come up with better solutions. Think about how your ideas can address emerging challenges and disrupt the status quo.

  • Adaptability: Be ready to pivot and adjust to new situations quickly. Embrace a growth mindset and be willing to learn from your mistakes.

  • Effective Communication: Whether pitching an idea or collaborating with others, clear and persuasive communication makes all the difference. Be able to articulate your vision concisely and inspire others to join your journey.

  • Networking Skills (Yes, They're Still Important!): Building genuine connections can open doors you never knew existed. Networking is not dead, it's evolved. Focus on fostering meaningful relationships with diverse individuals who can contribute unique perspectives and expertise.

Building Meaningful Relationships

We all have something in common, all of us. I challenge you to find at least three things you have in common with every new person you meet. You'll find, if you're looking for things you have in common, instead of focusing on what they can do for you, or if they like you, or if you're saying the right thing, it will completely change your entire conversation for the better.

Find common ground, share ideas, and truly listen. Approach networking as an opportunity to learn, be inspired, and spark collaborations that could change the game.

It's these genuine connections, not a cluttered contact list, that lead to real breakthroughs. Connect, don't just network. Build relationships based on mutual respect, shared values, and a desire to create something impactful together.

Conquering Challenges on the Path to Opportunity

Creating opportunities isn't a walk in the park. Don't let the common roadblocks get in your way:

  • Fear of Failure: Embrace failure as a learning experience, not a setback. View failures as stepping stones on the path to innovation.

  • Resource Limitations: Start with what you have. Build your network and leverage free or affordable online resources. Be resourceful and explore creative solutions to overcome limitations. Always ask for two to three additional connections to create a multiplier effect with your existing network.

  • Market Saturation: Feel like everything's been done? Innovate! Solve problems in ways no one has thought of before. Think outside the box and challenge the status quo.

  • Rejection: It's part of the process. Everyone gets a "no", don't let that slow you down. Learn from feedback and keep pushing forward. Develop resilience and use rejection as fuel to refine your ideas.

Embrace the challenges, leverage the tools at your disposal, and most importantly, never stop innovating.
